Microlight Flying School – Rise Above the Clouds

Microlight Training

A National Private Pilot License (NPPL) license is required to fly microlights, and can be gained by training with a qualified flying instructor in accordance with a CAA (Civil Aviation Authority)
syllabus of training. The minimum requirements are:-

  • 25 hours total flying time to include 10 hours solo and two qualifying cross country flights.

A restricted license is available with reduced requirements (15hrs total, to include 7hrs solo flying), but will limit you to flying to within 8 miles of the take-off point and is subject to other weather related criteria. In either case, you will need to pass a General Skills Test and an oral exam, which is much akin to a driving test. In addition to this you will need to pass 5 multiple choice exams in the following subjects:-

  • Principles of flight
  • Aviation law
  • Navigation
  • Meteorology
  • Human factors

This may all sound a lot, in practice it is fascinating and good fun. A microlight license is simpler than a conventional aircraft General Aviation license and can be gained in approximately 2/3 the flying time and at 1/2 the cost.

That means you are able to realise your dream spending less money.
Don‘t be frightened of the exams. Although thorough, they are easy and enjoyable to study for and our 100% pass rate serves to prove this point.

The above license requirements are minimums and do not guarantee a pass. Everyone learns at different rates and the time taken may vary from individual to individual.

Some Other Facts

To fly solo you must be at least 16 years old and hold a Declaration of Fitness which is based on the DVLA regulations, signed by your GP (no medical examination is normally required). A medical form and information sheets are available on the CAA website: www.caa.co.uk

The weight limit for flying in a Eurostar is 95kg (15st) and the height limit is 1.9cm (6ft 5in). For the Weightshift aircraft the weight limit is 110kg.

Once you have your licence you must complete at least 12 hours flying every 24 months of which 8 hours must be Pilot in Command to keep your licence valid.
